Externalization through Creative Expression

Have you ever felt so overwhelmed by an emotion that you couldn't see past it? Or struggled to make sense of a complex feeling that seemed to have taken residence in your mind? In the latest episode of The Creative Altar Podcast, we explore externalization through creative expression – a powerful tool for processing emotions and gaining deeper self-awareness.

What is Externalization?

At its core, externalization is the art of taking our internal experiences – emotions, thoughts, challenges – and giving them form in the physical world. Imagine taking that swirling anxiety in your chest and transforming it into a sculpture, or channeling your joy into vibrant brush strokes on canvas. This process creates a bridge between our inner and outer worlds, allowing us to observe and interact with our experiences in new ways.

Our Brain on Externalization

When we engage in creative externalization, we activate multiple brain networks simultaneously. The default mode network, responsible for self-reflection, works in concert with our emotional centers and executive function. This collaboration creates new neural pathways, helping us process emotions more effectively and develop greater emotional intelligence.

The act of creating along is a body soothing experience, as creative expression helps the release of dopamine and serotonin, helping lessen stress and anxiety.

From Childhood Wisdom to Adult Practice

As children, we naturally externalize through play – creating characters, stories, and worlds that help us process our experiences. In this episode, we explore how this innate wisdom can be reclaimed and refined in adulthood. Through intentional creative practice, we can separate challenging emotions from our sense of self, gaining perspective and opening new pathways for dialogue and understanding.

Try It Yourself

This episode includes a guided exercise for expressing and dialoguing with emotions through art. This practice isn't about artistic skill – it's about creating a conversation with yourself through creative expression. All you need are some basic art materials and a willingness to explore.
